vibe check #22: -4 degrees, a very tidy mouse and how to stay humble (even when you're a golden globe winner)
A dose of joy and motivation to get you through the week.
It’s -4 degrees in Amsterdam right now. I repeat, MINUS FOUR DEGREES in Amsterdam right now. It’s so cold that the gears on my bike froze and left me only able to cycle to work in first gear yesterday. In a way, having to move my legs so fast (which must’ve looked so stupid and hilarious) helped me to stay warm, but I’m definitely encountering new hurdles in the Netherlands that I never thought I’d need to get over.
Although it’s bitterly cold, the sun has been shining across the brightest blue skies this week. It’s actually the perfect weather. The freezing cold temperatures aren’t getting in the way of Amsterdammers going about their lives, either. People are all layered up in their biggest coats, fluffiest scarves and warmest gloves, seeking out the sunny side of the street. They’re still bundled up outside bars, still meeting friends, still heading to the gym and still cycling to work. It just goes to show, preparation (and a drawer full of thermal layers) is always the key.
Anyway, now onto the good stuff. Scroll down for this week’s three Vibe Check recommendations, on a mission to deliver a dose of joy and motivation to get you through the week.

He may have won Best Director of a Motion Picture for Oppenheimer at the Golden Globes this week, but Christoper Nolan need not worry about being kept humble. On a recent Peloton workout with instructor Jenn Sherman, one of the songs from the Tenet soundtracked was played. Acknowledging where the song was from, Sherman then went on to describe the film as, ‘two and a half hours of my life that I want back.’ But what she didn’t realise was that Nolan himself was taking the class. Perfection. Watch here.

Raise your hand if you wish someone would tidy things up after you. Ok, now raise your hand if you wish a mouse would tidy things up after you? Well, a man in Wales noticed that when he left things out on the workbench in his shed at night, they’d be mysteriously tidied up the next morning. He decided to set up a night vision camera to figure out what was going on, and discovered that like something out of the cartoon Cinderella film, a little mouse was tidying everything away for him. January might be bright and sunny right now, but we all know the weather will get us down at some point. We all need all the positivity and joy we can get, so I’m sharing an impossible-not-to-feel-happy-when-listening-to-it song every week this month. Here’s Keep The Fire Burning by Gwen McCrae. Stay warm and listen here.
That’s all for now. See you next week!
